Why having a fake smile can be a good thing on TV

This is my fake smile. Someone close to me called me out on it recently, and I joked that it's actually what I call my poker face.

It is the brave face I put on to mask my real feelings and develop that propelled me through the relentless world of live TV. My outward composure remained unyielding as I maneuvered through delivering breaking news to millions. Little did I know that this skill, honed under the spotlight, would become my secret weapon in entrepreneurship.

For years I had to train myself to stay and look calm and collected while sometimes delivering some pretty horrible breaking news to millions of people.

But let me tell you, inside my head; it was a completely different story. It was processing new information very quickly and was scared of messing up.

Yet, here's the twist: despite the internal whirlwind, something remarkable happened. Every time I rocked those live TV appearances, I often got praised by family, friends and coworkers I stayed so "calm" despite how fast the breaking news was changing.

Being someone who prides myself on being authentic and transparent in both business and life, you can imagine my surprise when I was suddenly confronted about my "fake smile" in recent weeks.

Yet, despite the discomfort of being called out and feeling as though my true self was being exposed, I couldn't deny the undeniable truth: my poker face has been an invaluable asset in the world of entrepreneurship.

Whether I'm doing a live webinar for hundreds and the tech goes sideways, or if I'm in a challenging meeting—I always know how to look calm AF. We have taught over 100 women entrepreneurs the same skill when they do live media interviews.

Looking calm while your thoughts are in disarray can help you to hold value in gathering yourself to embrace what lies ahead. It's the secret to seamlessly transitioning from one task. It also can help you to respond instead of react.

In those moments when I don't have the energy to show up, my "fake smile" becomes my saving grace. It's the tool that allows me to push through the toughest of days because let's face it—life and business don't hit the pause button just because we're feeling off.
