10 common mistakes business owners make when pitching the media
If you are making any of these 10 mistakes when pitching to the media, it may be time to overhaul your PR strategy. Here are the top offenses that will get your pitch deleted and ignored by producers and reporters:
The “hook” in your story is buried (this is the most important part of your pitch and tells the media why your story is newsworthy)
Or, there simply is no “hook” so the media doesn’t know why they need to interview you about your thought leadership now.
The pitch is all about YOU and not the story. (You go on and on about your experience and credentials).
You forget to link to stats or reports you reference and base your thought leadership solely on opinion.
Your media pitch is TOO long. It shouldn’t be longer than 350 words.
The pitch is plagued with poor grammar/spelling and is not in CP style. CP style guides can be found at your local bookstore.
You send your pitch to the wrong producer or reporter.
You spell the reporter or producer’s name wrong. 😐
You send your pitch at the wrong time of day when the producer or reporter’s shift is over.
You send a templated pitch as a "blast" to multiple media outlets. And finally the bonus infraction...you forget to include your contact info!
Okay so how do you avoid this hot mess and pitch with purpose?
