When I landed a corporate comms job I thought I hit the jackpot. I had stability and “secure” regular pay and I didn’t have to work weekends. These sound like the basics, but if you ever worked in news you will know these are rare luxuries.
Like most reporters I held this limiting belief that corporate communications was my only option outside of a newsroom and that it was my golden ticket to freedom.
In my new corporate comms job however, I had to be at work at 5:30am. My commute was two hours everyday and I still had to be “on” and check my BlackBerry constantly. It wasn’t the freedom outside of a newsroom I thought I would get.
But more than the disappointing new job I signed up for, the sluggish pace to get things done in a corporate environment was draining my soul. Doing a news story in TV took a few hours whereas in corporate a two minute video took two months 🤦🏽♀️. I was not living up to my full potential, in fact my growth was stunted.
It was only when I made a decision to become a media coach and be my own boss that my life truly transformed. I put myself first for the first time ever. I took back ownership of the direction of my entire life and it changed everything
Now I choose to work remotely and a max of 30 hours a week. I choose what I pay myself. I choose which clients and projects I want to work on. I choose the types of stories we tell and what voices get amplified.
And most of all I’m finally living up to my fullest potential. Who knew that media coaching and entrepreneurship was the golden ticket for freedom I had been searching for all along!
So if you are a reporter reading this, ask yourself - are your limiting beliefs holding you back from all that is possible for you and a life outside of news? And is corporate comms really going to give you the life you want?
