Only 1 in 4 women land media interviews
On #IWD2023, let’s talk about some grim statistics about women in the media….if you are a woman entrepreneur, you are most likely not being booked as a guest expert for a media interview and losing out on opportunities to get your business featured. I know this because the statistics show that only one in four women are being booked for media interviews.
I’ve also seen this play out in real life when working in newsrooms over a 15 year period. Historically the go-to experts in the database have been men. As a result the discourse in the media is limited to the perspective of men. (Nothing wrong with their perspective, we are just trying to level out the playing field here!)
So why does this happen? Two reasons:
Reporters and producers are on deadline all the time. So when pushed up against the clock, they rely on their go-to experts that are in the database that have been used time and time again. (Guilty as charged over here!)
Even though we know what national exposure could do for our businesses, for the most part women don't have the tools to push themselves to the front of the line. We are uncomfortable marketing ourselves, we are so afraid to make a mistake on live tv, but most of the time we don't even know where to start.
So how can we expect to change the underrepresentation (or systematic exclusion) of women in the media?
Here's where to start:
Educate yourself on what stories are covered in the media about your expertise
Connect with reporters and producers in this country that have an inclusive lens to storytelling (so many are doing such great work)
Work on your mindset, you can have all the media strategy in the world, but if you don't understand your value you will always be stuck.
And save and use these affirmations when you feel stuck:
My voice matters, it always has and always will.
My story matters, it always has and always will.
