How do you become the media’s go-to expert?
When I went from journalism to PR I realized there is a lot of mystery around how entrepreneurs end up on the news sharing their expertise with millions. From the start, it’s always been my mission to put back this weird veil of secrecy around landing media AND simplifying the process.
Here are the three basic steps to help you better understand the process and get from point A to B.
Step 1: Strategy
Clearly define your expertise. It doesn't matter if there are already a dozen experts in your industry that speak to the media, you have a unique position that the media is looking for. Knowing what your thought leadership is and your perspective helps to influence your pitches and gets you booked faster.
Step 2: Plan ahead
Pull out the calendar and take a look at holidays, national event days and months that the media will be covering as part of their news cycle. Some examples include Black History month, Women’s History month and Asian Heritage month. Understanding how to connect your stories to the media’s news cycle and significant dates will increase your chances of getting booked. The key is not to pitch the same story that everyone else is pitching.
Step 3: Craft a winning pitch
Write a customized pitch and prove to the media that you have done your homework and that you know how to connect your thought leadership to their news cycle. You have to make the story about their audience and less about you.
